Superstitions

Last week a gal that I carpool with and I were talking about superstitions. I was totally amazed by how superstitious she is. We discussed things like opening an umbrella in the house, walking under ladders, spilling salt, breaking mirrors and other superstitions I was familiar with, but one she mentioned I have never heard of, “pointing at a rainbow brings bad luck”. I’ve never heard this one before. Our conversation made me curious about superstitions and why people are superstitious; I decided to do a little research for some answers. There are many superstitions out there, here are a few that I found:

It’s bad luck to see an owl in the sunlight.

Rosemary planted by a doorstep will keep witches away.

If you drop a pair of scissors it means your lover is being unfaithful to you.

It’s bad luck to let milk boil over.

A yawn is a sign that danger is near. Cover your mouth when you yawn or your soul will go out of your body along with your yawn.

If 3 people are photographed together, the person in the middle will die first.

Placing a bed north and south brings misfortune.

If you catch a falling leaf on th first day of autumn you will not catch a cold all winter.

Seeing a spider run down a web in the afternoon means you will take a trip.

An acorn at the window will keep ligtening out.

If you say goodbye to a friend on a bridge you will never see them again.

Three butterflies together mean good luck.

These are just a few of the superstitions I found, believe me there are many more. These are some that I have never heard before.

I did not grow up in a home that regarded superstitions nor followed them to avoid back luck. We had our share of misfortune but never blamed it on broken mirrors or black cats. Good fortune was not sought by tossing salt over our shoulder or wishing upon a lucky star. The root of superstitions is fear; fear that bad things will happen to us or to someone we love and/or that we will miss good fortune (knock on wood) but ultimately it is the fear of death. Hello Blogger Friends,

I apologize for being MIA for so long. Believe me I have lots of excuses but I'll only share the one.

I mentioned here that I got a job. I had the perfect hours but that changed. My shift changed to a day shift so now I am getting up at 2:45 AM...yes, I said AM. It makes for a long, tiring day. I am adjusting to the difference finally and perking up. All I wanted to do when I came home was go to bed but there are chores to do as well as spending some time with the family before I fall into bed around 8:30. It's not been easy but like I said I am starting to adjust.

In all of this my Etsy shop has suffered as well as my blogging. I've had good intentions but until I got over the energy drain of all this, I simply could not make it happen.

With all that said, let me introduce you to Mr. Bones. Mr Bones is cut from 1" pine and wired together. He's a custom order from an Etsy customer. I must say I am glad to be painting again. I have another project on my table that I will be sharing with you once it is finished, hopefully this week. I didn’t realize how much I had missed blogging and visiting other blogs until I signed on and opened my blog page.
